Living With Epilepsy

Daily Life Considerations

Epilepsy affects school and work, driving, sleep routines, emotional health, stress and daily safety.

Safety Tips

Driving

Driving laws vary—many require being seizure-free for 6–12 months.

Bathing & Swimming

  • Never bathe/swim alone

  • Keep bathroom door unlocked

  • Prefer showers over baths

Sports & Physical Activity

Most sports are allowed with precautions. Avoid activities with high fall or drowning risk unless supervised.

Sleep & Stress

Both are major seizure triggers. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule and minimize stress where possible.

Seizure Triggers

Common triggers include:

  • Lack of sleep

  • Illness

  • Missed medications

  • Alcohol

  • Flashing lights (rare)

Medication Basics

  • Take medication exactly as prescribed

  • Use reminders or pill organizers

After a Seizure

  • Check for injuries

  • Provide reassurance

  • Help reorient the person
